Thursday's Topic: November 15, 2012
Nov. 16th, 2012 06:58 amI forgot yesterday was Thursday. Forgive me, kind people of this community. Anyways, Thursday's topic is on a Friday this week.
Anyways...
Which sequel is your favorite? It could be a theatrical one, a Muppets one, a direct-to-video one, you decide! And for the sake of argument, which sequel do you absolutely LOATHE?
My favorite is Aladdin and the King of Thieves. I find it just as funny as the first one, though the animation is definitely less than stellar. The movie just makes me super happy. The Aladdin series in general does.
And, for the most part, I like/tolerate the sequels. The older ones I grew up with, so the nostalgia connected with them makes it hard for me to hate them. The only one I take extreme amounts of issue with is Fox and the Hound II. It focuses less on Tod & Copper and more on new characters, characters that were highly unpleasant. It just wasn't good, yo.
What about you?

Date: 2012-11-16 02:28 pm (UTC)I don't remember why, because that would have involved more thinking about it/working at keeping it in my memory than I was willing to do, but I also hated the Fox and the Hound sequel. I think it seemed the most "sequel for the sake of sequel rather than sequel because this idea works as a sequel at all."
I haven't really poked the greater Lilo & Stitch franchise, but I know I'd resent anything that gave Lilo a love interest, because darn it, that screentime could be used to give David more character development. Also, she's five. :|;

Date: 2012-11-16 02:40 pm (UTC)Fox and the Hound II was just an awful movie. And a lot of the reason I hold a lot of hate is because I HAD to buy that one with the Fox and the Hound 2 Movie Collection thing :/ With the exception of the Fantasia & Rescuers double pack, I hate that Disney's been releasing them as 2 movie sets >.>
I do not remember the Lilo and Stitch sequels. I've seen a few of them (I think there's three?), but I honestly don't remember which movie is which and what happened in which one. I haven't bothered to go back and watch them.

Date: 2012-11-16 03:16 pm (UTC)Wow, I didn't know Lilo and Stitch had gotten that big. I know a TV show existed at some point, and... that's about it.

Date: 2012-11-16 03:50 pm (UTC)Otherwise, I think my least favorite sequel is the third Aladdin sequel - not King of Thieves, that was good, but one that came after it. And I think that's in part because the animation was so bad. The artwork in the original movie was just so stunning. Compared to it, the third movie hardly seemed like the same series.
As for my favorite sequel, Toy Story 3! 2 was pretty good, and it set the stage nicely, but I think 3 was definitely a stronger film overall, that better carried the original ideas of the first film. I can be pretty friendly towards sequels as well. A lot of the Pixar ones coming out, I'm really excited for.
Also, all three Lilo and Stitch sequels. I am just amazed that they managed to just so consistently keep to the intent and style of the original films through so many. My love only grew with each one~.

Date: 2012-11-16 07:17 pm (UTC)It actually went Aladdin to The Return of Jafar to the animated series to The King of Thieves. King of Thieves (which actually has Robin in it) is faar superior to Return of Jafar, which has Homer from the Simpsons in it.
And, yeah, in the Toy Story series, 3 is better than two. Two is good, but three is just better.

Date: 2012-11-16 08:12 pm (UTC)*~The More You know!~* I especially wonder what they did to entice Williams back. I know he was ticked after the initial movie because they disregarded his wishes about the film advertising, so I'd understand if he didn't want to come back.
Two is good. Three probably wouldn't even have been as good without two. But, three is better. I've found that's often the case with trilogies, on the whole. I feel the same way about LotR, or Johannes Cabal.

Date: 2012-11-17 04:49 pm (UTC)If I remember correctly, they made a huge apology and gave him a painting (a Picasso one, at that). And then they did something to piss him off again and so he's not really in the bonus features on the DVD. Which makes me mad. Because I want to hear what he has to say about the movie, dammit!
My source is IMDB, though, so take it with a grain of salt xD

Date: 2012-11-16 07:42 pm (UTC)Oh, I also liked Cinderella III because I thought it gave us a fun way of exploring the characters' personalities in an AU kind of way. I felt like everyone was still in character with the original movie, too, which was great.
The Aladdin sequels were my childhood favorites, I loved the way they tied into the TV show XD
My least favorite sequel is definitely Lady and the Tramp II. Everything about that movie just made me scream. I also don't like either of the Little Mermaid sequels.
There's probably more that I'm not thinking of... lol

Date: 2012-11-17 04:53 pm (UTC)An I thought the same for both Cindy III & the Aladin sequels (:
I saw Lady and the Tramp II before I saw the original because we were forced to watch it in school. I didn't like it. I think having the sequels revolve around the children of the main characters is lazy.

Date: 2012-11-16 11:28 pm (UTC)The one sequel I positively loathe, is Hunchback of Notre Dame II. It completely insults the integrity of the original, and the music. Oh god, the music is just so goddamn awful. I have so many feelings about that, but I just can't make sentences right now.

Date: 2012-11-17 02:51 am (UTC)I also really liked the Aladdin sequels.
The sequel I cannot stand is the Hunchback of Notre Dame one. What in the name of all that is merciful was that mess?

Date: 2012-11-17 04:38 pm (UTC)I dislike Return of Jafar, but I lovelovelove The King of Thieves.
I haven't seen Hunchback of Notre Dame in ten years or so years. I hated it. I grew up loving Esmeralda and hated how she was handled in the sequel.

Date: 2012-11-17 02:57 am (UTC)For Pixar, yeah- the Toy Story trilogy is amazing.
Least Favorite has to go to Pocahontas II. It's horrible, offensive and doesn't even remotely try to touch the heart of the original film. Plus- Disney movies are not going to be historically accurate and trying to "fix" that with a sequel was a horrid horrid idea.

Date: 2012-11-17 04:30 pm (UTC)The Toy Story trilogy is forever amazing <3
I haven't seen Pocahontas II in over 10 years. I saw it shortly after it came out and that was it. I have no wish to see it, either, because I remember hating it. How dare they split up John Smith and Pocahontas! HOW DAAARE THEY.

Date: 2012-11-17 04:34 pm (UTC)Most of the DtV sequels are awful. I enjoy some of them, but some of them are just painful to endure.

Date: 2012-11-18 02:24 am (UTC)I also remember liking Aladdin and the King of Thieves as a kid as well. When I was younger I liked Lady and the Tramp II. Even now I don't think it's completely awful, but "bland" doesn't even begin to describe Scamp. I found the backstory rivalry between the main villain and Tramp to be a lot more interesting, and the story could have done without Angel completely. Come on, media, not everyone needs a love interest to be happy.
Speaking of which: I vow never to watch Hunchback's sequel fully. I really liked what they did in the end of the first movie - Quasi got what he wanted most with all his heart, which was acceptance from the city. Although he loved Esmeralda, it was a nice change for Disney to have her choose someone else - her choice was predictable, but Quasi still had to come to terms with it - and it ended perfectly. There are many movies that don't need a sequel, and Hunchback is definitely one of them.
Also, I wait with some trepidation for Monsters University. I'll probably watch it at the pictures out of sheer curiosity, and I know it's not good of me to judge before the movie's even come out, but the trailer just made me grimace on the inside. The fake website for the college Pixar have going on is excellent though, so I hope that the movie itself is a lot funnier. In time I'll be able to see for myself.
