Happy 10th Anniversary, Treasure Planet!

Ten years ago today, on November 27th, 2002, Treasure Planet was released to U.S. theaters, making it the 43rd entry into the Disney Animated Canon. Directed by Ron Clemens and John Musker, this movie was put off by Disney for a long time, as they wanted Musker and Clemens to direct Hercules. They agreed, but only if they got to do Treasure Planet next. Though this film ended up being a big financial failure for Disney (according to Box Office Mojo, it didn't even make its budget back in theaters), it has gained a firm cult following over the past decade.

In celebration of this milestone, Disney has released a 10th Anniversary Blu-Ray edition of the movie.

So! What are your thoughts about this movie? Is it one of your favorites? Least favorites? What do you like/hate about it? Do you have it on DVD, or will you be purchasing it on Blu-Ray? Anything Treasure Planet related, goes!

I didn't see it until earlier this year, but I was pleasantly surprised by it. Not one of my favourites, but it's still a solid movie (and according to my science-y friend, a lot of the science actually holds up, at least to someone who is knowledgeable but not an expert). I might even get the Blu-Ray now that I know about it.

Wow, 10 years already? Time flies! I just got TP on DVD for Easter, so of course it's coming out on Blu-Ray now. Sigh.

I have always loved this movie for its beautiful gorgeousness and the absolutely amazing space-faring ships and Jim's cool solar board. It's really funny to look back at how my attitudes to the characters have changed. I was a teenager when the movie came out and I think I may have had a bit of a crush on Jim (hello, Joseph Gordon-Levitt! I do still have a crush on him lol). But when I rewatched the movie this spring, as an adult and as a teacher, Jim started to remind me of some of the more troubled kids I've taught, one who was a fourth grader and one a sixth grader. Both of them learned and grew so much when I had them, and I see them in Jim and it makes my heart melt. I think TP is such a great adaptation of Treasure Island because it showcases the sorts of things that are relevant in our world now, with Jim Hawkins updated to be a modern, rebellious teenager who's damaged by his father's abandonment of their family, and this journey really helps him grow and turn his life around. I loved this movie as a teen for its fun adventure story and awesome space setting, but I think it's even more meaningful to me now.

Sorry that was corny XD I just love this movie sfm!

Also, I love that poster. It's got a slightly different background than the ones I've seen before. I used to have a litho of that shot, I wonder where it went...?

Also, this is just speculation, but I always wondered if the reason it didn't do well in the box office is that it came out the same year as Lilo and Stitch, only a few months later, and so a lot of people didn't realize it was a Disney movie. (This was true at my high school, at least. Everyone I talked to either hadn't heard of it at all or thought it was a Dreamworks movie, which didn't seem to be as popular back then). I also feel like it wasn't very heavily advertised. It just seemed like the way they put it out and the little attention they gave it set it up for failure.

I think that makes a lot of sense. I think it also looked different enough from their normal that a lot of people just didn't want to see it.

Wow, 10 years? Really? Time flies! I'm not used to thinking about certain movies being older.

I've always loved this movie ever since I first saw it, and I'm sad that its so underrated. I'll have to pick up the anniversary release when I'm able to!

I love this movie because I relate to Jim Hawkins.

Because of reasons.

Also because I'm Still Here is an amazing song.
